Biography

Josh grew up in Northwest Indiana on the southern shores of Lake Michigan. The region is one of the steel making hubs of the United States and is home to oil refineries, major transportation arteries, and electric generation plants. All the way back in grade school, it became apparent that electricity and computers would be in his future. After exceling in all of the higher math and science classes he could get his hands on in high school, he enrolled in the Electrical and Computer Engineering program at Purdue University Calumet where he graduated in 2009. While in college, he continuously worked for three years as an engineering intern in the same steel mills he had spent his childhood growing up near.

Josh spent four more years working full-time as an electrical specialist in steel mills following graduation. There he gained experience in raw material handling and steel rolling facilities. He had opportunities to plan and execute equipment outages, lead electrical maintenance shops, and implement the Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) methodology. He gained exposure to PLC programing, VFD’s, quality management, as well as operator interface development with control systems (HMI).

Josh had the opportunity to work for eight years as a plant electrical engineer at a large coal-fired generating station with around 2000 MW capacity at full load. Here, he became the plant protective relay engineer, responsible for the maintenance and upgrade of over 2000 relays. He gained extensive knowledge in Arc Flash analysis of electrical equipment. He functioned as the site lead for large rotating electrical equipment, including generators, exciters, and large medium voltage motors. While acting as a project engineer during major capital projects, he developed switchgear specifications for low and medium voltage gear.

In 2021, after 12 years of engineering and leadership experience in a heavy industrial environment, Josh founded J A McGee Tech Services.
